Borough of Poole announces new tenant for Poole Park Miniature Railway concession.

Borough of Poole is pleased to announce that Friends of Poole Park, a local community charity established in 2002, have been successful in their tender to operate the Poole Park Miniature Railway.

The concession, which first opened in Poole Park in 1949, will receive investment from the new tenants including a phased track replacement, the development of the station and engine shed, and hosting of special events and festivals throughout the year.

Chairman of Friends of Poole Park, Michael Collins said: “We are delighted that Borough of Poole have awarded us the miniature railway concession.

“We have worked hard for many years to protect, promote, and enhance Poole Park, and we are looking forward to doing the same for our new concession.

“We have many plans to enhance this wonderful attraction and would welcome any volunteers who would like to become members of Friends of Poole Park to assist us in keeping Poole Park as a wonderful area for all to enjoy.”

Following a robust tender process, Borough of Poole selected the bid offering the best opportunity to modernise and develop this attraction whilst providing best value, in terms of investment & revenue, for local people.  Final lease negotiations will now take place during May, with a view to the concession starting prior to the summer holidays.

Councillor John Rampton, Portfolio Holder for Environmental Services, said: “We are delighted that Friends of Poole Park will be the new operator of this much loved concession.

“We look forward to working closely with this committed charitable group, and to the investment and improvements in the railway.”An opening weekend to celebrate the new launch of the miniature railway will be announced at a later day.

Love Parks Week is  15 July to 24 July 2016

A huge thank you to everyone attending the 125 event held on the closing day of Love Parks week, we were blessed with good weather and the Poole community and visitors really rallied round to support the park.  We hope you enjoyed the day, you have helped to raise over £3000 for  our 'Back the Bid' campaign and every £1 raised has the potential to be match-funded by up to ten times by the Heritage Lottery Fund.  There are still some donations to come in and we will let you know the final figure as soon as we can.  We were very pleased to be awarded a plaque and certificate from Love Parks in recognition for our contribution to our park.

Thanks to our wonderful band of volunteers who may these events possible.

1st  & 5th Saturday of the month -  10am start -  Poole Park Healthy Walk

Meet outside The Ark Café.   A 1 mile circular walk around Poole Park Lake. There is no
need to pre-book - just turn up and walk with a friendly and sociable group

The HLF have made their decision.....
    It's a Yes!
.....See the heritage Lottery Bid page for more information

There has been significant recent interest in one aspect of our bid to the
Heritage Lottery Fund for funding for Poole Park. The concept of opening up the surface water pipe in Copse Close to try and improve water quality entering the boating lake has clearly caused concern for local residents.
Please  find a full response below  that should hopefully explain the decision making so far and the process in to the future. I would like to reiterate that there are no definite plans  for this part of the park, it is merely one suggestion of many, the decision of which is dependent on the funding bid being successful, a year-long research project and only then, in 2016, investigation in to feasibility studies.

Hippo, Turtle & Whale for Poole Park!
The much-loved wooden play sculptures that first made an appearance in the Arndale Centre (now the Dolphin Centre) when it opened in 1969 have found a new home!  Made by artist Peter Hand the Hippo, Turtle & Whale withstood nearly 30 years of children clambering on them before they were removed in 1997. They have since made highly publicised special appearances in the shopping centre, and have even been the subject of a ‘Reinstate the Dolphin Centre Wooden Sculptures’ campaign on Facebook!  The animals will be installed soon in the area of the Park once occupied by the zoo (1963-1994); being made from good quality varnished mahogany (and with a little TLC each year) we are confident they will stand up to the weather. Discussions are ongoing with the Dolphin Centre to provide a suitable timber structure in which to house them and installation is now likely to take place early in 2015.
